The 8 Parts of Speech in English
The 8 parts of speech are the basic types of words used in English. Each one has a different job in a sentence. Here they are with easy examples and sentences:
1. Noun – a person, place, thing, or idea
Example words: cat, school, football, happiness
Sentence: The cat chased the mouse.
Nouns are essential building blocks of sentences that name specific entities. They can be concrete (like objects you can touch) or abstract (like concepts or feelings).
2. Pronoun – a word that takes the place of a noun
Personal Pronouns
Example words: he, she, it, they, we
Sentence: She is reading a book.
Plural Pronouns
Pronouns like "they" and "we" refer to groups of people and help avoid repetition in sentences.
Object Pronouns
Pronouns like "it" can replace objects or concepts previously mentioned in conversation or writing.
3. Verb – a word that shows action or being
Action Verbs
These show physical or mental activity.
Example words: run, jump, think
Linking Verbs
These connect the subject to additional information.
Example words: is, are, seem
Example Sentence

4. Adjective – a word that describes a noun
What Adjectives Do
Adjectives modify nouns by providing more information about their qualities, quantities, or states.
Example words: red, tall, happy, noisy
Sentence: The tall boy kicked the ball.
Adjectives help create more vivid and specific descriptions in our language, allowing us to distinguish between similar nouns.
5. Adverb – a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb
Modifies Verbs
Shows how an action is performed
Example: She sang beautifully.
Modifies Adjectives
Intensifies or lessens qualities
Example: The very tall building
Modifies Other Adverbs
Adjusts how another adverb works
Example: He ran incredibly quickly
6. Preposition – shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word
Location
Example words: in, on, under, beside
These prepositions show where something is positioned.
Time
Example words: during, after, before
These prepositions indicate when something happens.
Direction
Example words: to, toward, through
These prepositions show movement or orientation.
Sentence: The book is on the table.
7. Conjunction – joins words or groups of words
Example words: and, but, or, because, although
Sentence: I wanted to go outside, but it was raining.
Coordinating Conjunctions
Join words or groups of equal importance (and, but, or)
Subordinating Conjunctions
Connect dependent clauses to independent clauses (because, although)
Correlative Conjunctions
Work in pairs (either/or, neither/nor)
8. Interjection – a short exclamation or remark
Express Emotion
Interjections convey sudden feelings or reactions.
